BAGUIO CITY (PIA) – A social worker appealed to the parents to be cautious of their parenting style to ensure the well-being of their children.
Shirley Casallo, a social worker of the Bahay Pag-asa, said that some people oftentimes compare the differences of children from the past and present generations.
Casallo emphasized that there are just some contributory factors why the behaviors of children of today have changed.
“We have to be aware also as parents a saan nga nagbaliw ti ubing. Nu asino diyay ubing idi, ubing da latta agingga itatta. There are some contributory factors nu apay nga nag-change the way the children behave,” she said.
Casallo said parents should also check their parenting style instead of putting the blame on other people including social media.
She noted that the number one factor why most of the residents at the Bahay Pag-asa suffered is their family background such as broken families and violence inside the home.
“Isunga agbirok da outside iti attention, love, belongingness nga ibagbaga da. Kitaen tayo nu anya ti nagkurkurangan tayo, it’s not always nga fault iti ubing,” she added.
[This is the reason why they seek attention, love, belongingness outside. We have to see where did we go wrong, it’s not always the child’s fault.]
Aside from the changing family dynamics, the technological advancements are also a factor in shaping the childrens’ behavior.
Instead of letting the children focus on their gadgets and social media, parents must spend quality time with them by playing games or having meaningful conversations.
“We also blame social media ngem sino ti makinkontrol iti social media? Datayo met laeng nga parents. Nawawala na ‘yung quality time. Hindi sa nilalahat, ngem based iti experiences dagiti ubbing iti BPA.”
[We also blame social media but who controls the social media? We, parents. The quality time is being sacrificed. Not all, but this is based from the experiences of the children at the BPA.]
She reminded that providing a supportive environment to children and nurturing healthy relationships with them will promote their healthy growth and development. **DEG-PIA CAR
