The Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) has flagged 22 motorists for overspeeding last June 15 and 16, 2025.
In a report to Mayor Benjamin Magalong, BCPO Director P Col Ruel Tagel said citation tickets were issued to the violators. There were three apprehended on June 15 and 19 on June 16.
The erring motorists registered speeds ranging from 40 kph to 58 kph based on the BCPO’s speed measuring gadgets.
The strict imposition of the speed limit ordinance was one of the measures adopted to curb the increase in vehicular traffic incidents in the city.
As stipulated in Ordinance No. 18-2019 or the Speed Limit Ordinance of Baguio City, a maximum speed of 20 kph is strictly imposed within the Central Business District and 30 kph in all other inner roads.
The BCPO worked out the procurement of speed measuring devices including speed guns and radar sensors for effective implementation of the ordinance.
Tagel told the mayor they were able to purchase two speed guns that comply with the standards set by the National Police Commission and the Philippine National Police.
The mayor’s request for review and amendment of the speed limit ordinance is being worked out.
The Traffic and Transportation Management Division of the City Engineering Office, Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) and the City Legal Office are drafting the proposed amendment for submission to the city council.
The mayor earlier brought up the need to adjust the speed restrictions to ensure their suitability to a given area.
The mayor said actual experience negated the suitability of the speed limits provided under the ordinance.
“We tried running at 30 kph along South Drive and it is not advisable. It should be around 40 kph. Same is true with Loakan Road, Kennon Road and Marcos Highway. We need to look at other roads where 20-30 kph limit is not appropriate,” the mayor noted. ** Aileen P. Refuerzo
