BAGUIO CITY – The Department of Trade and Industry in the Cordillera (DTI-CAR) and the city government are intensifying their crackdown on establishments selling products that fail to meet national quality standards.
In a statement on Tuesday, Mayor Benjamin Magalong, said uncertified products in the market put consumers and their properties at risk, especially items without the mandatory Philippine Standard (PS) mark or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC).
These safety certifications indicate whether products comply with national standards for quality and safe use.
“We are sustaining our campaign to ensure product quality, fair trade practices and consumer protection in the city,” the mayor said.
DTI-CAR Regional Director Raymond Panhon explained that their teams continue to monitor business establishments for non-compliant items, such as electrical materials and imported goods without proper labeling or permits.
Earlier this month, the city government and DTI-CAR destroyed around P86,800 worth of seized non-conforming products.
These included liquefied petroleum gas cylinders, wiring devices, light bulbs, extension cords, circuit breakers, galvanized iron wires, PVC pipes and Christmas lights. Authorities also crushed 80 defective weighing scales confiscated from the public market.
Panhon reminded consumers to stay alert, know their rights and help promote safety by avoiding uncertified goods. **Liza Agoot
