BAGUIO CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) has reminded the public to take precautions against illnesses commonly associated with the cold season, as temperatures in the city and other parts of the Cordillera continue to drop.
DOH-Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) Director Dr. Amelita Pangilinan said changes in weather and temperature can trigger various ailments, but these can be prevented through proper care and hygiene.
She encouraged residents, especially the elderly and children, to wear warm clothing and head covers such as bonnets to help protect against the cold.
Pangilinan emphasized the importance of maintaining good health practices, including regular handwashing, getting enough rest, eating nutritious food, wearing face masks when necessary, keeping the surroundings clean, taking only prescribed medicine, and staying hydrated.
In its advisory, the DOH-CAR listed flu and common colds, allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis as common illnesses during the cold months of November to March.
These conditions, characterized by symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, sneezing and skin dryness, are often aggravated by dust, cold wind and dry weather. The agency urged the public to consult health centers for proper diagnosis and medication.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Baguio City recorded a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius early Monday (Nov. 3, 2025) and a daytime high of 26 degrees.
The city is expected to experience even colder temperatures, possibly dropping to single digits, during the “amihan” season from late January to early March, a period also associated with increased cases of flu and influenza-like illnesses. **Liza Agoot
