LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Facing constrained national budget allocations, the Benguet State University (BSU) is intensifying efforts to expand its internally generated revenues to sustain operations and fund priority programs, officials have said.
Dr. Josel Florentin, BSU vice president for business affairs, reported on Wednesday that the university now runs seven major income-generating projects that collectively provide significant financial support.
These projects help meet the university’s financial needs, he said.
Among the top earners is the BSU bakery, which generated PHP16.45 million as of October after rolling out new products and securing Food and Drug Administration (FDA) coverage for several items.
Parking fees contributed PHP8 million, while lease rentals brought in PHP42.6 million.
The food processing center recorded PHP9.15 million, driven by improved versions of its trademark strawberry jam, ube halaya, and polvoron. Garments produced by the university added PHP1.72 million, while products sold at the marketing center generated PHP30.7 million. The center also operates the “Tingi-tinging Tubig” refill station, which promotes reduced plastic use on campus.
Other revenue streams include the school canteen (PHP16.05 million), the home management and executive guestels (PHP1.87 million), and the university’s poultry farm (PHP2.58 million from eggs and meat).
Florentin said BSU continues to study new income opportunities “without compromising the mandate of the university,” citing controlled campus parking as one example.
In a separate report, Vice President for Administration and Finance Dr. Richard Kinnud said BSU also saved PHP9.5 million through procurement efficiencies. He noted that internally generated funds have become crucial after the university received only PHP945,962 of its proposed PHP2.7 million budget for 2025.
For 2026, BSU has proposed a PHP2.98 million budget as it prepares to open new nursing and medical programs. Kinnud said the university has already received commitments to support the construction of related buildings and facilities. **Liza Agoot
