Have you ever wondered why, after many years of not riding a bicycle, you can still get on one and somehow remember how to balance and pedal? Or why an older farmer who has worked with a spading fork, carried baskets, planted rice, or walked mountain trails for decades can continue to perform these movements almost naturally? The answer is partly what we call muscle memory.
Muscle memory refers to the body’s ability to remember and repeat movements that have been practiced many times. When we repeatedly perform an activity—walking, climbing, swimming, dancing, gardening, carrying loads, or playing the ukulele—the brain and muscles gradually become more efficient at working together. The movement eventually requires less conscious thought. This is why familiar physical activities can feel almost automatic. Muscle memory is developed by regular purposeful movement.
Muscle memory is especially relevant to health as we grow older. Regular physical activity helps maintain muscle strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and endurance. These abilities are important not only for athletes but for everyone, whether living in a city, a small town, or a remote village.
Consider the everyday activities of many Filipinos. Farming, fishing, gathering food, tending livestock, chopping firewood, carrying water, walking long distances, climbing slopes, and doing household chores all require physical strength and coordination. These activities can help keep the body active. In urban areas, similar benefits can come from walking, gardening, climbing stairs, dancing, cycling, or simple exercises at home.
But muscle memory does not mean that our muscles can remain strong even when we don’t use them. When we become inactive because of illness, injury, hospitalization, or simply advancing age, muscles gradually lose strength. Fortunately, the body can often relearn familiar movements when activity is resumed. Someone who was once physically active may regain strength and coordination more readily than someone who has never practiced those movements, although recovery varies from person to person.
For older adults, maintaining muscle memory can be particularly valuable. Strength and balance can help reduce the risk of falls and make everyday tasks easier. Simple everyday activities such as walking, rising from a chair, carrying light objects safely, stretching, or doing balance exercises can help maintain physical function. The important principle is consistency rather than intensity.
Our traditional ways of living also remind us that movement is part of everyday life. Indigenous communities have long depended on physical skills passed from one generation to another—skills involving farming, crafts, hunting, fishing, dancing, cooking, and caring for the land. These activities are not just work or cultural practices. These activities are what contributed to physical fitness and independence of our elders. In this digital generation, what muscle memory would they develop ngata?
Muscle memory teaches us an encouraging lesson: the body learns through movement, and it benefits from continued use. Whether we live in the city or in a rural village, keeping ourselves physically active is one of the simplest ways to protect strength, independence, and quality of life.
