BANGUED, Abra (PIA) — Closed fishing season for “Ludong” or lobed river mullet found in the Abra River Basin and Cagayan River Basin will possibly be extended from October 1 to November 15 to December 15
National Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (NFARMC) member Jerome B. Baay shared that they are considering amending Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Administrative Circular No. 247 to extend the closed fishing season for ludong.
“As result of quarrying and dagitoy bagyo, adda ti pasamak na nga bumassit ti ludong tayo nga ag-migrate nga mapan agitlog iti baybay isunga ilunglungalong mi tatta nga mai-extend kuma daytoy BAC 247,” he explained. (As a result of quarrying and tropical cyclones, the ludong population gets lower because they migrate to the sea to lay eggs, that is why we ae suggesting to extend BAC 247.)
Baay also shared that the BFAR, through its Fisheries Inspection and Quarantine Division, is monitoring the implementation of regulations to conserve local fish species like the ludong.
“Adda ti naisayangkat met ditoy Abra recently nga training ti fisherfolk tayo para iti Bantay Ilog tapnu isuda met laeng ti mangkita ti implementation dagitoy regulations ken para mapaadu tayo ti lames tayo,” he said. (A training on Bantay Ilog was recently conducted for Abra fisherfolk who will ensure the implementation of the rules and regulations, so that fish population would increase.)
Aside from the ludong, Baay also noted proposals to create policies and regulations for other local fish species that are native to Abra such as the goby (bunog) and goby fry (ipon), and palileng.
“Daytoy goby fry tayo kasi sitayo ti maysa nga kadakilan nga agim-import ti ipon, bunog, ken palileng ket daytoy ti maysa nga makitkita tayo nga iaramidan ti regulation na at the national level,” he added. (We are one of the biggest importers of goby, goby fry and palileng, so we looking at this as one that be provided regulation at the national level.)
