La Trinidad, Benguet — A group of concerned youth from La Trinidad has raised a bold and urgent call to action by posting a banner that reads “Benguet, agriing ka!” (Benguet, rise up!). The message urges fellow citizens to take a stand against corruption, particularly in relation to the widespread substandard infrastructure projects across the province.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has allocated at least ?4.3 billion for flood control projects in Benguet since 2020 to 2024. An additional ?14 billion was spent on rock netting projects, implemented by over 98 contractors. Despite these substantial investments, Benguet continues to be one of the hardest-hit provinces by floods and landslides. This raises serious concerns about the quality and effectiveness of these government projects.
The concerned youth individuals also carried placards demanding accountability and a full investigation into these allegedly flawed and overpriced projects. They believe these infrastructure initiatives have failed to deliver real protection to the communities, and instead highlight deeper issues of corruption and mismanagement.
As part of their advocacy, the group is calling on fellow youth and all citizens of Benguet to join the protest in Baguio City on September 21 at Baguio Convention center.**KPL
