15 September 2020 – Three public schools in the City of Baguio were chosen as pilot areas for a digital e-learning resource project funded by a foundation to provide supplemental materials for science, math and reading.
The city government of Baguio and the Department of Education – Baguio signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kilusang Kabataan Livelihood Foundation (KKLF), an advocacy group that primarily focuses on aiding marginalized and displaced Muslim children, today for the digital learning resource project.
Kristin Bangot, chairperson of the KKLF said her foundation will donate learning materials similarly used by international schools to provide quality education to the beneficiaries.
Dep-Ed Baguio has identified Baguio Central School, Apolinario Mabini Elementary School and Pines City National High School as pilot areas for the digital learning resource system.
Bangot said the donation will benefit 50 students from each of the three schools will be direct beneficiaries of the digital learning system.
“The advocacy of the foundation is to give a quality education program for Muslim students but not this time, not necessarily Muslims only, other students here can use the e-learning materials,” she said.
She explained that a portal key will be given for the identified beneficiaries to have an access for the e-learning materials. “It depends on the teachers and the DepEd how they will utilize learning materials so that other students can also use the materials or the content.”
KKLF has partnered with the F and J De Jesus Inc., a distributor of digital learning materials such as I-Ready, Raz-Plus and Science A-Z – the same learning materials used by international schools to identify learning gaps and provide focused assistance to improve the education of students.
In support to the project, Mayor Benjamin Magalong donated 10 computers already in the pilot schools for the digital learning materials to be installed. Either the teacher or the student will use through the computer and if the student has a tablet, the application can be downloaded for distance learning.
It can be recalled that the mayor promised the provision of free wi-fi in the barangays to ensure that education is not delayed during his State of the City Address on Baguio Day, September 1.
Magalong earlier announced that the city budgeted Php 16.5 million pesos under the Special Education Fund for the learning modules of students while the city continue to find ways in supporting the blended and online learning in Baguio.** Jessa Mardy Samidan
