Reports have recently come out over the violent and “Gen-Z” led protests in Nepal over corruption and inequality. The protests came after the government’s ban on social media and fully erupted after shots have been fired. Before all this it was also reported that frustrations were already mounting as pictures of children from political families showcasing their lavish lifestyles became trending on social media, while the ordinary youths lived a vastly different way of life.
The protests, looting and burning eventually caused Nepal’s government to collapse. Ministers’ homes were burned and looted and some news outlets even claim some ministers were stripped and paraded.
The frustration from the masses is clear to see. While not everyone surely agreed with the looting of businesses, many younger people can sympathize or even outright support the Gen-Z of Nepal. Many of our Gen-Z are experiencing the same things, the same inequality and perhaps an even worse form of corruption.
There is a saying that goes “Screw around and find out” and for as long as I can remember the people of this country have been screwed over on so many occasions. Come the disasters and the officials fly off to vacation while their own constituents drown and watch their houses get destroyed. The money that should have went to the improving their surroundings have gone off to politicians’ pockets and those of their conspirators.
But people find out eventually. The consequences of our actions or perhaps the price for our sins always come surely and truly. The youth are powerful. That is definite. After these recent events, I don’t know how a government can look at that and still refuse to strive for better. They underestimate the capabilities of the youth and just what frustration and anger can drive a man into doing. But the evidence is everywhere, the youth decides the future, anyone who disputes that is fighting an uphill battle.**
