Amid technological advancements that spawned modern learning methods from traditional modes, the Baguio City Public Library has managed to stay relevant to the educational needs of the local community.
From being just a mere repository of reading materials, the city library has become a dynamic life-learning institution and vital partner in scholastic education and community involvement through its various innovative services.
City Librarian Easter Pablo said they have been actively pursuing learning activities that are interactive, inclusive, and tailor-fitted to the needs and requirements of modern-day learners and the general public.
This is part of the City Government’s thrust on youth and public literacy and empowerment through knowledge.
Among their innovative services is the Inclusive Lifelong Learning Program, a flagship endeavor offering free educational activities designed to foster creativity, confidence, and practical skills. The program targets learners of all ages, focusing on introducing young children and the youth to reading, enhancing life skills, and nurturing imagination in fun and meaningful ways.
One of the program’s flagship highlights is the regular “Storytelling at the Park,” held every Saturday at the Children’s Park. This initiative has quickly become a community favorite, drawing families and young learners into a shared space of imagination, cultural enrichment, and early literacy development.
To support students’ academic needs, the library provides regular Free English and Math Tutorials for elementary and high school students, aimed at strengthening foundational skills and boosting classroom performance. Complementing these are Information Literacy Activities and Reference Assistance in the different sections of the library that help students develop critical thinking skills by teaching them how to locate, assess, and effectively use information.
In addition, the library conducts a wide range of specialized activities made possible through the support of volunteers, partners, and advocates. When available, these generous contributors facilitate enriching sessions such as: Research Seminars and Webinars; Makerspace Activities including Robotics and Animation; Guitar and Voice Lessons; Creative Writing Workshops; Arts and Crafts Sessions; Financial Literacy; Employment Application Strategies; Cultural Forums; and other community-based learning initiatives.
Recognizing the growing importance of digital competence, the library also conducts Digital Literacy Training sessions that cover basic computer use, internet safety, and productivity tools essential for both school and work. Continuous enhancement of the library’s online and digital resources and services was another thrust that provided seamless access to learning opportunities.
Meanwhile, youth engagement is further encouraged through thematic contests that form part of the library’s Knowledge Enhancing and Cultural Activities. These include essay writing, arts, content creation on socially relevant themes, culturally relevant competitions, and trivia challenges—all aimed at promoting creativity and showcasing young talent.
In its efforts to broaden access to educational resources, the library operates a Bookmobile and Reading Outreach Service, bringing books and storytelling sessions to remote and underserved communities. Additionally, the library’s Book Pantry Initiative offers patrons the opportunity to freely select reading materials they need. Stocked with donated books from the community, the Book Pantry serves as a valuable resource for individuals seeking literature, fostering a culture of shared learning and generosity.
Events such as In-House Storytelling Sessions, Book Talks, and Author Launches not only connect young readers with diverse literary works but also foster a culture of reading and literary appreciation.
These wide-ranging programs have also fostered a strong culture of volunteerism. The library has welcomed a growing number of dedicated volunteers who have played an essential role in the successful implementation of its activities and services. Their contributions—ranging from facilitating workshops and storytelling sessions to assisting in outreach efforts—have significantly enriched the library’s community engagement and impact.
The Baguio City Public Library has also been instrumental in establishing and enhancing Barangay Reading Centers. These localized hubs aim to expand the reach of educational services and promote community-based learning.
Through these forward-thinking initiatives, BCPL remains a vital institution, bridging traditional learning with contemporary needs and reaffirming its role as an indispensable partner in education, literacy, and community development. ** Aileen P. Refuerzo & Easter Pablo
