LA TRINIDAD Benguet – – The Department of Education-Cordillera launched a regionwide project dubbed “READ to LEAD” or Reading Enhancement Approaches Developed through Listening Engaging And Doing to improve the learning aptitude of students.
With Education Secretary Leonor Briones as the guest of honor and speaker, the project was launched through a Reading Exhibit and Reading Fiesta at DepEd – CAR Regional Office here last January 31.
The READ to LEAD generally aims to bring back the culture of book reading to the school children. Its objectives are to utilize assessment results in developing appropriate interventions that will help improve the literacy skill of all types of learners; to enhance reading programs and approaches in the schools; to intensify division efforts in ensuring that every learner is a reader at the grade level, and to upskill and reskill all teachers in becoming effective reading instructors. The program’s components include assessment, up skilling and reskilling and monitoring evaluation.
The launching of the program included a story telling contest, search for most commendable reading program and learning resources and booths with contextualized learning resources developed from the School Divisions of Baguio City, Tabuk City, Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga and Mountain Province.
Briones, in her keynote message, congratulated DepEd – CAR for the program citing that with the advent of technology there are now many sources of data/information such as television, internet and social media which can lead to miseducation. But through regular reading of books, it can help school children to improve their comprehension or process of data and their values that are usually embedded in the story books.
DepEd CAR Regional Director May Eclar said the READ to LEAD Project is the region’s contribution to the “Sulong EduKalidad” program of the Education department that Secretary Briones initiated.
The program came about through the inventory of the reading programs and interventions being implemented by the region’s different school divisions to improve the reading skills of the learners, Eclar said. **JDP/CCD-PIA CAR
