As the world becomes more and more “high tech”, the gaps in economic opportunities the poor and the rich could exploit are widening even more. It is of course the rich who are getting better education and so there are more job opportunities on offer for them.
Most jobs now being created as economies get developed require some computer literacy. If a person never saw what a computer is, much less what it can do, chances are the job he can get are the menial ones or those whose pay are just minimum if not even lower.
Those who understand how the potentials of a computer can be used to accomplish more in the workplace are those who were educated. The better the education one had, the better he is in such a workplace. And the better paid he is.
This is how economic disparity is perpetuated. Educated parents have better chances of sending their kids to better schools, who will in turn have better jobs or higher paying ones.
In an effort to equalize the situation, the government is now offering free basic college education in SUCs (State Universities and Colleges). Still there are a lot of kids of those in the lower rungs of the economic ladder who cannot take advantage of such. For they are dirt poor even buying enough food for the family is a daily struggle.
With such a reality, there should be more scholarships to be offered for kids whose needs shall be taken care of from pre-school to college. They should not be left under the guidance of parents who are not even qualified to become parents. Who could not even lead themselves to have decent lives. If they have promising kids in terms of intellectual potential, the State should have an agency which shall have custody over them and provide the appropriate education for them to become assets instead of liabilities of the country.
The problem is, our political leaders are incapable of thinking along this line. They are only interested of lining their pockets. Nothing more.
