It aims to recognize the accomplishments and important contributions of learners, teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders of DepEd.
Thus, OUA MEMO 00-0321-0042 was issued, resulting in the Department of Education (DepEd), through the Bureau of Learners Support Services – Youth Formation Division (BLSS-YFD), launching of the Gawad Siklab: Search for Outstanding Program Implementers, Student Leaders, Supreme Student/Pupil Government (SSG/SPG) Teacher-Advisers, School Heads, and Regional and Division Youth Formation Coordinators this year.
The search is open to all public schools, school heads, student leaders and teacher-advisers of Supreme Pupil Governments (SPGs) and Student Supreme Governments (SSGs), Youth for Environment in Schools-Organizations (YES-Os), Gulayan sa Paaralan Programs (GPPs), Barkada Kontra Droga (BKDs), and Regional and Division Youth Formation Coordinators.
Previously, the Youth Formation of SDO-Baguio City was conducting the “Beggang ti Bag-iw “ award for the different clubs and organizations since 2017 up to the present. It is only this year, 2021, that the Division used the term “Gawad Siklab” in the recently conducted search.
What does “Gawad Siklab” mean?
Siklab is a Filipino word meaning spark, ignite or kindle. Deped believes that the flame from the torch, that symbolizes the quest for knowledge, starts with a spark. Localizing it in our own dialect, it is “Beggang”. Beggang is a kankana-ey term which means live charcoal which can also be a source of a flame, it can start a fire. When a Beggang is separated from other Beggang, the heat and light that it produces will be gone and it turns back to a dark or dead charcoal. We want our students to shine with their own potentials. We believe that the leadership, knowledge, and skills of leaders start in schools. These are where the leadership journey of leaders begin. If all schools come together, they will create a heat that will ignite the burning passion of youth leaders and will produce a light that will make student leaders in Baguio City shine or stand out.
To wit, based on the conducted search which was participated in by sixty-seven (67) public schools, both elementary and high school, the division hereby gladly announces the twenty (20) winners who had undergone rigid assessments in the process.

While the Gawad Siklab aims to give recognition to the most outstanding implementers of the youth-related programs and projects in schools, we know that these young leaders, teachers, and school heads were, and will be, doing all of these not just to be given awards but to ensure that our youth will have a better and brighter future. That indeed is more meaningful than any award or recognition that they received or will receive. ** Samuel F. Bab-anga
