Due to the deadly rates of fuel, a transport strike has taken place nationally. But local transport groups in Baguio City have refused to join in.
As a student and a commuter, the news of local transport groups refusing to participate in the strike is a pleasing one. Without it, there will surely be added hardship. And as we near the end of our semester and we start to juggle more activities, the absence of jeepneys would disrupt any and all plans made.
But continuous service amidst exploitation is not the respectable decision. As a national strike is ongoing and they let their demand known, that demand could be taken more seriously if all transport groups would unite and join the activity.
We, in the highlands, cannot just be bystanders to national issues all the time. There is a time to draw a line between service and exploitation. As drivers in Baguio break their backs to earn an even lower amount than before, nothing will change if they don’t let their discontentment show.
All plans be damned, if the country is forced to stop moving just to force the government officials to do their jobs, then that would be worth it. **
