Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda, in a resolution, has requested the barangays in the city to look into the possibility of providing available computer and internet services to students for their online learning this school year.
Tabanda said the online learning component of the blended learning modality being implemented by the Department of Education for this school year poses a big challenge to both students and their parents due to the lack or absence of necessary gadgets and internet connectivity.
Many students are not able to catch up with lessons and school requirements because of this deficiency, Tabanda stressed.
The councilor said almost all barangay halls are equipped with computer systems and internet connection, thus, the barangay council may allow students to use the barangay computer units for their online classes and school-related requirements.
“In keeping with today’s educational system as more of a shared responsibility, then the barangay which has the resources, may do its share to help the students catch up with their online lessons by allowing the students to use the barangay computers for free,” Tabanda stated.
Tabanda also suggested that barangay officials shall closely monitor the students using the barangay computers to make sure that the same shall be used strictly for school-related activities only.
Tabanda further proposed that the barangay shall arrange a schedule so that more students are accommodated for the same purpose.
Copies of the resolution will be transmitted to all the barangays in the city for information and appropriate action.
Earlier, Tabanda also passed a resolution temporarily suspending certain provisions of Ordinance 66-2020 (Regulating the Operation of Computer Shops, Internet Shops, and Internet Cafes in the City of Baguio…) in order to allow students in the city to use computer shops for their online classes and for the accomplishment of their online requirements.** Jordan G.
