The City Government of Baguio conducted a solemn retirement ceremony for a worn-out Philippine flag, June 1, 2026 at the Baguio City Hall grounds, honoring the national symbol with dignity and respect in accordance with the law.
The ceremony was held pursuant to Section 14 of Republic Act No. 8491, otherwise known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, which provides that Philippine flags that have become worn out through prolonged use must not be casually discarded. Instead, they should be disposed of through a respectful ceremonial burning to prevent misuse or desecration.
The retirement rites commenced with the ceremonial lowering of the worn-out Philippine flag from the flagpole. This was followed by a solemn march led by members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines and a lady portraying Inang Bayan.
Following the march, distinguished guests delivered messages highlighting the significance of the retirement rites and the rich history of the Philippine flag. Their remarks emphasized the importance of respecting the national emblem and preserving the values of patriotism, honor, and national identity that it represents.
The ceremony culminated in the respectful cremation of the worn-out flag. After the ceremonial burning, the ashes were carefully placed in an urn and laid to rest at the Baguio City Hall Garden.
Leading the ceremony were Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan, members of the City Council, and representatives from the Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts of the Philippines.
The retirement ceremony, held as part of the observance of National Flag Day, served as a solemn reminder of the significance of the Philippine flag and the responsibility of every Filipino to uphold the values and ideals it represents. **Ariel Biala
