The parts of the SONA against politicians was good to hear but we had been hearing similar things since time immemorial. Nothing, however, ever happened in a sustained way. So this is the time for the President to prove his mettle. Does he really mean business?
The people will only believe if he can show he can make politicians accountable for corrupted public funds. For up to now, after three years, he has nothing yet to show in the form of bold decisions he successfully followed through up to the very end. Take for instance the impeachment of the vice-president due to alleged graft in the handling of hundreds of millions of confidential funds. So many still could not believe the President is against the move as he expressed a number of times. Yet he could not even get the process moving smoothly. It recently hit another snag in the Supreme Court.
There is also another remedy that could have been undertaken simultaneously, through graft cases. If that will be stalled because the Ombudsman is an appointee of the vice-president’s father, get him impeached. Such bold action is the kind people will believe in. For they had been hearing only insincere political promises for too long already. Is the President up to the task? We will soon see.**
