Once again it seems the ghosts of this country is something we cannot outrun. Along with the many “ghost” promises that have come and gone in recent decades, now “ghost” projects are the ones getting center attention. A case of bribery attempt towards a government official has also been reported. Imagine how many more of these bribery cases are left unreported, and how much more rich leaders are out there who became richer in just seconds. In a few moments, the death seals for families living in flood-prone or dangerous areas are marked just like that, with a simple yes from a politician for the money that was supposed to build the safety structures for already struggling Filipinos.
Our country is haunted by many things, but none perhaps has tormented so much, so long and so deeply the Filipino people than the ghost of corruption. This haunting is what drives so many of my young peers to work hard in school not to help exorcise this evil entity but to help them reach the paradise abroad. I myself have thought about taking that route deeply and tempted so many times.
Imagine yourself as a prospect home buyer and see a potential house to buy. Then you get told it is haunted and many tenants have moved away due to the many ghosts within it, of course you immediately turn around and look for other options.
Our country is being seen as just another option by many younger people. A poor option among the many better ones abroad.
I have seen many talented and hardworking students and I do not wish them to give their services to a foreign country. What fortunes it will bring if our country can retain many of its talented younger generations. Sadly, the allure of foreign work is too enticing and the terror of local hauntings is too much.**
