The Visayas region has been recently battered by a storm again. In the pictures, they captured the tragedies set upon the common people. Cars piled up on top of one another, houses destroyed, communities left in such horrid states, and the murky brown water still covering much of the streets.
It was recently reported that several Cebu mayors and executives filed for leave and left for vacation in Europe in the first week of November before the state of calamity was declared in the province.
So while the common people suffered against the harsh winds and never ending rains, as flooding wrecked their homes and took away their loved ones and to this day remain missing, the supposed “leaders” are enjoying the sunshine of Europe. Not having to worry whether their roofs can hold up, planning to run towards the nearest evacuation center and wonder in the dark if this storm would be the one to take you.
The recent storms have been deadly, yes. But let us not forget who left the people defenseless in the first place. Storms have always existed, something our ancestors experienced. But I don’t know if they have experienced corruption this bad from one of their own countrymen.
It is possible to defend against storms, it is only because the people were left on their own and the resources to build their defenses were taken from them that they suffer even more. And now that they have suffered, they are again left on their own as elected officials scurry off to somewhere sunny, with not even an ounce of guilt and shame in their cowardly actions.
While Cain was the first killer, the deadliest killers in our nation are the politicians. **
