BAGUIO CITY October 12 – The Cordillera office of the Department of Education (DepEd-CAR) accepted the offer of Baguio City and the City Schools Division for the country’s Summer Capital to host the 2017 Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) sports meet slated for February 6-10, 2017.
In his letter to Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan, DepEd-CAR Officer-In-Charge Edgardo Alos informed the local chief executive that the agency accepted the offer of the local government to host the staging of the 2017 sports meet after sports officials, coaches, and division superintendents unanimously agreed on the city as host for the premier regional sports event for the third consecutive year.
It was learned that no other local government in the region submitted its offer to host the conduct of the regional sports event next year, thus, the agency was left to decide on the offer of the local government of Baguio and the City Schools Division to host the CARAA.
Domogan assured there will be significant improvements in the sports facilities to be used by the athletes next year as developments are on-going within the Baguio Athletic Bowl.
The local government plans to put up a multi-storey building within the vacant space in the swimming pool area to be used for indoor sports and athletes’ quarters using the initial appropriation of P60 million from its supplemental budget last year.
The local chief executive claimed participating athletes will be given a chance to showcase their skills and talents in various sports venues around the city as identified by the organizing committee.
The CARAA is a venue where athletes from the region will be chosen to represent CAR in the various sports events in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa by May.
Alos informed the local chief executive that Baguio City was the unanimous choice of the participants in the regional management committee meeting of the education department.
In 2015, the city was chosen to host the CARAA and the city government again signified its intention to host the 2016 regional sports event after improvements in its sports facilities like the rubberized track oval of the Baguio Athletic Bowl and other facilities within the said venue were completed.
Domogan exhorted concerned departments to make sure that the different sports venues around the city will be improved way ahead of time for the hosting of the regional sports event next year to prevent rushed work.**By Dexter A. See
