Just got in from a reunion of our group way back in college. Went there with a thick jacket and a bonnet for it was cold. That fact alone betrays my age. Am already 70. The other attendees’ ages were not far from that. An age when one becomes kind of sensitive to abnormal conditions— high or low temperatures, for instance. Well, we are not young anymore.
It was good to see long lost friends. We were missing though some colleagues due to the short notice and the bad weather. Everybody was looking good. No pretensions. We all seem to have had that feeling we already arrived. We have found our right places in life, doing what we were meant to do.
As always, we had a good laugh as we walked down memory lane. What ever happened to us in college was for the best. There was no such a thing as good or bad. Those were meant for us to reach the here and now, for which we should be grateful.
While everybody looked great yesterday, there were talks of some having gone through medical procedures but they already looked good like normal. I was the only one who was causing some worries. Thus, I had to explain to everyone my having improved a little bit resulting in the reduction of my dialysis sessions from 3X a week to just twice. I guess am in the right direction so am continuing eating green leafy veggies with almost no salt, sugar, anything acidic like condiments, oil, high potassium items such as tomatoes, etc. In short my food is very bland. Not so different from “kaning baboy.”
At any rate, where to from the reunion?
We go back to wherever we are based, to continue doing whatever we are doing. Surely, we are doing something good for ourselves, for others, the rest of the world or humanity.. . . in our small ways.
We were a good investment of government. If not for that public school where we met, the country would have missed out on us. We could have become sabongeros, night club operators, jueteng cobradors or other seedy characters.
So here we are bravely standing to face the future for our progeny and whoever could benefit from our short existence and any humble consequence. Whatever we are or will be suffering from, we won’t back down and we will keep pushing through.
In the end, because of that public school we will leave our mark and would be able to say we had been here. Those coming behind us will see.**
