CITY OF TABUK, Kalinga, Apr. 2 (PIA)–The province has sufficient rice supply during the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) period, the provincial agriculturist assured.
Engr. Domingo Bakilan said there are millers here who have plenty of rice stocks, and the buffer stock of the National Food Authority is good for 19 days.
It is also almost harvest time in Rizal municipality simultaneous with corn. Inflow of rice supply will go on since corn delivery trucks delivering outside the province will have rice as their back load. So, it helps for our stock build-up, Bakilan said.
Farmers in the upper Kalinga region will also harvest in June.
To help farmers sell their products at this time of ECQ, he urged farmers from Rizal to sell their products in Tabuk City to avoid going to COVID-19 affected provinces.
Meanwhile, Bakilan advised farmers that lessen farming expenses this ECQ period, apply the “saboy” or “pinurwak” (direct seeding) system to save on labor inputs – seed bed preparation, pulling of seedlings (sikka) and transplanting. However, this is not recommended for hybrid rice seed since the variety is too expensive. **JDP/PAB-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
