BAGUIO CITY – It’s more fun for arnis and its enthusiasts here in the City of Pines.
The city’s young practitioners of the Filipino martial arts discipline romped-off with the over-all championship in the Kids and Juniors division of the 107th Baguio Charter Day National Arnis Championships held here recently with a medal tally of seven gold, one silver and one bronze medal. They belong to the Tribal Clan Martial Arts System.
Tournament Commissioner Jayson Vicente revealed, however, that being the host of the tournament and in the spirit of good will, the group waived their first place ranking to the Neon Sports team of Isabela that garnered 4 gold, one silver and 8 bronze medals.
In second place was the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) team of Sta. Mesa, Manila, with 3 gold, 2 silver and one bronze medal. Bataan National High School was third, harvesting two gold, four silver and four bronze medals. In fourth place was the Remnant team of Baguio with two gold, two silver and six bronze medals.
In the seniors division, the Rizal Technological University team of Mandaluyong triumphed with a tally of nine gold, seven silver and one bronze medal. In second place was the Philippine Army representing Manila with five gold, four silver and seven bronze medals while the Philippine Military Academy of Baguio came in third with four gold, five silver and nine bronze medals. In fourth place was PUP of Sta. Mesa, Manila with two gold, three silver and five bronze medals.
Vicente revealed that 21 teams from all over the country participated in this year’s arnis championships held in coordination with the city government thru the city sports office headed by Gaudencio Gonzales.
Other teams who joined were from Central Luzon State University of Nueva Ecija, Dinagyang Bastonero of Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Valenzuela, Jalung Pampanga, Benguet State University, and NIIT, Saint Louis School Center, Josefa Carino Elementary School, Guisad National High School, AMA Computer College, CAR Training Center, Elpidio Quirino, all from the host city.**gaby keith
