LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Barangay Poblacion in the municipality of Bakun is selected as one of the pilot sites for the installation of a landslide early warning system.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan granted authority to Governor Crescencio Pacalso to forge a memorandum of understanding with Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS), University of the Philippines, which holds the Intellectual Property Right over the system and the Bakun local government units, to implement the so called Dynaslope Project or the Development of Site Specific Threshold for Deep-Seated Landslide and Slope Failures aimed to develop and test early warning system protocols.
To be installed at barangay Poblacion is a ground movement tracking device that records the movement of ground in real time.
The Project’s goals are to provide highly effective monitoring and early warning and information, develop cost-effective monitoring and early warning system for landslides and empower partners to lead in reducing risks from landslide hazards down to the barangay level.
Funded by the PHILVOLCS, the project does not entail financial counterparts from partner LGUs but to extend assistance in the implementation of an early warning protocol, conduct at least one EWS protocol drill before December 16, inclusion of landslide EWS protocol alert levels in the LGU’s contingency plan and in the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Plan, and designation of key persons in information dissemination.**By Susan Aro
