Bontoc, Mountain Province – In a swift response to a structural fire, the Bontoc Local Government Unit (LGU) provided immediate relief to a family whose home was partially destroyed in Tangad, Barangay Tocucan, Bontoc, Mountain Province.
The fire started at 3:30 PM on January 5, 2026, at the residence of Marcelo Wayyas, who lives with his wife, Esther Pinos-an Wayyas, and their grandson, Lucas Wayyas.
According to reports from the Tocucan Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Committee, the blaze completely gutted the second floor of the house, which was constructed of galvanized iron and wood and included two bedrooms. All belongings and P30,000 cash, were lost/ burnt in the incident.
Personnel from the Bontoc Municipal Fire Station, aided by community volunteers, extinguished the fire by 3:53 PM on the same day. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
On January 6, 2026, Bontoc Mayor Franklin Odsey, who also chairs the Municipal DRRM Council, personally led a team from the Bontoc LGU to deliver essential aid to the affected household.
The assistance included prepositioned logistics which were provided by the Office of Civil Defense -Cordillera Administrative Region (OCD-CAR) to the Municipality of Bontoc comprising one family kit, three pails of hygiene kits, and two shelter repair kits.
