BAGUIO CITY – The city government of Baguio was awarded as Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) on Dec. 13 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City.
Representing mayor Mauricio Domogan, executive assistant Ryan Mangusan of the city mayor’s office together with city health officer Rowena Galpo and city nutrition officer Angelita Sabado, received the CROWN trophy plus five hundred thousand pesos cash incentive during the 2016 National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony.
The CROWN award is being given to a municipality, city or province that has been adjudged by the inter-agency Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) as outstanding in the region in the implementation of its nutrition action plan for three consecutive years.
To realize the city’s vision to have a healthier, productive life through proper nutrition, numerous ordinances and resolutions were enacted by the Sangguniang Panlungsod to better facilitate the implementation of several nutrition and nutrition-related interventions like the feeding program for day care children in all barangays, backyard gardening to augment the nutritional needs of the elderly and their families, among others.
Galpo said, “a unique strategy in the city was the organization of Community Health Teams composed of barangay nutrition scholars (BNS), barangay nutrition action officers (BNAO), barangay officials and other health staff deployed at the district health centers, who implement community health services and outreach projects providing health care to its people”.
Moreover, with the Baguio City Nutrition Committee’s strategic and sustained nutrition interventions and the continued cooperation among its program implementers as well as the local communities they serve, the city maintained an almost zero prevalence of underweight cases, added Galpo. **Jho Arranz
