A joint inspection led to the discovery of unsanitary food handling practices and dog meat and spoiled produce being sold in some backstreet food establishments in the city.
The joint task force composed of personnel from the City Veterinary and Agriculture Office (CVAO) lead office, City Treasury Office – Market Division (CTO-MD), Health Services Office – Sanitation Division (HSO-SD), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-CAR) and the Public Order and Safety Division (POSD) formed two teams and conducted meat and fish monitoring and inspection operations along Rajah Soliman and Dagohoy Sts. on April 24, 2025.
The POSD said that at Rajah Soliman St., the team confiscated approximately half a kilogram of spoiled shrimp displayed for sale. A citation ticket was also issued to the responsible vendor for violating City Ordinance No. 35, series of 2017, the Plastic and Styrofoam Ordinance.
While inspecting restaurants, eateries and establishments along Dagohoy Street in Kagitingan barangay, the group discovered meat not fit for human consumption in an eatery.
The team also checked the eatery’s chest freezer and confiscated three slaughtered dog heads, weighing a total of 3.75 kilograms.
“The luncheonette received a stern warning and a Notice of Violation for infractions of Republic Act No. 9269, the Meat Inspection Code of the Philippines, and City Ordinance No. 69, series of 1991, which regulates dog trading and the sale of dog meat in Baguio City,” the POSD said.
There were also establishments in the Katipunan area that were slapped warnings for unsanitary food handling practices.
The joint monitoring and inspection operation is being conducted regularly as part of the city government and BFAR’s commitment to ensuring food safety and consumer health and welfare protection. ** Aileen P. Refuerzo
