BAGUIO CITY (PIA) – – The Department of Health reminds the public anew to clean possible mosquito breeding sites in their homes and surroundings and protect themselves from Dengue as cases are on the rise.
DOH–Cordillera Entomologist Alexander Baday, in the PIA Cordillera-led Kapihan media forum on Thursday, reported that 1,171 dengue cases were recorded in the region from January 1 to July 10. The figure is 76 percent higher compared to the 664 cases recorded during the same period last year.
There are also seven deaths (5 in Baguio City and 2 in Benguet) recorded compared to the two last year, Baday added.
Per geographical area, Benguet has the highest cases, followed by Baguio City.
The Baguio City Health Services Office(CHSO) issued a public health advisory against Dengue as the 416 cases recorded from January to July 17 this year show a three – fold increase compared to the 103 cases recorded during the same period last year. The five deaths recorded were two females aged 18 and 65 years old and three males (11, 15 and 30 years old).
City Epidemiologist Dr. Donnabel Tubera–Panes said Dengue cases in Baguio involved both young and old, with ages ranging from 8 months old to 90 years old.
Panes said dengue cases in the city suddenly peaked in June with more than 200. Clustering of cases is also noted in 19 barangays in the city from June 20 to July 15.
Baday thus reiterated to the public the 4S against Dengue – Seek and destroy possible Dengue mosquito sites, Self – protection, Seek Early Consultation and Say yes to fogging only if deemed necessary.
As the COVID-19 pandemic confines most people at home and community gatherings are discouraged, it is now up to individuals and families to seek and clean mosquito breeding sites in their homes and surroundings.
With flowers, ornamental plants and vegetable home gardening also getting popular, he also advised people to make sure that there are no stagnant water on their gardens. **JDP/CCD-PIA CAR
