BAGUIO CITY – The Cordillera Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) has directed local government units and disaster offices to help disseminate an advisory urging residents to temporarily suspend mining activities as rains from successive weather disturbances heighten risks.
Albert Mogol, CDRRMC chair and Office of Civil Defense regional director, issued the reminder during a pre-disaster risk analysis meeting on Wednesday as Typhoon “Mirasol” exited and Tropical Depression “Nando” entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
“As protection, we ask everyone to refrain from going underground for mining or engaging in river-based activities,” Mogol said.
As of 5 a.m. Thursday, the weather bureau reported that “Mirasol” was moving west-northwest over the sea west of extreme northern Luzon, bringing gusty winds in coastal and upland areas.
Meanwhile, “Nando” maintained its strength over the Philippine Sea and is expected to intensify into a typhoon by Saturday, with the possibility of reaching the super typhoon category.
Mogol emphasized that heavy rains could trigger landslides and put miners working underground at risk.
“Let us advise our residents to postpone mining-related activities for their own safety,” he added. **PNA
