BAGUIO CITY – – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) – Cordillera Regional Director Janet Armas encouraged women with disabilities to take the lead role in empowering their sector to ensure that along with government efforts and private sector assistance, their rights will be protected and their other unmet needs will be addressed.
In empowering others, especially persons with disability (PWDs) in the remote areas who are still not aware of the programs and services available for them, as well as in setting up a better environment to live on for the younger generations of Filipinos who may have to live with special needs, help us bring a better environment for them, Armas said during the observance of Women with Disabilities Day at the SM Mall Atrium, Monday.
‘I believe that despite the challenges you face in your condition, you have the skills and ability to achieve your goals and aspirations. Many in your sector have already proven this. Given the opportunity and the right system achieving your goals toward success in life is not far to reach,’ Armas added.
The DSWD in partnership with the City Social Welfare and Development Office led the observance which was participated in by women with disabilities and mothers of PWDs. The celebration included a simple program, a low intensity Zumba (dance exercise) especially designed for the participants and other treats.
An event within the celebration of March as Women’s Month by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 744, this year marks the 14th observance of Women with Disability Day with the theme, “Babaeng May Kapansanan, Sa Pagbabago Manguna at Manindigan ka”.
DSWD – Cordillera focal person for PWDs Rojhelea An Marie Claur informed that programs and services for the protection of the rights and welfare of women are already inclusive in the programs of DSWD and other government agencies.
Under existing laws, PWDs are entitled to many privileges like discounts on medicines, food establishments, public transport and basic commodities (as defined by the Price Act of the Philippines), among others, Claur said. To avail of services and privileges due them, they only need to get medical certification and register at the local social welfare and development office in their respective localities. **By Carlito Dar
