BONTOC, Mountain Province, (PIA) — To raise community awareness and to inculcate health and nutrition habits for children at an early age for healthy living, the provincial government conducted Healthy Mother and Child and cooking contests in celebration of this year’s Nutrition Month.
This activity also promotes health consciousness among mothers regarding different factors affecting the health of children and detecting ill health and sickness at early stages.
Qualified in the search were babies born any day of June 2018; normal delivery, full term, with birth weight of 2.5kg to 3.5kg; delivery attended at a health facility; baby is exclusively breastfed for 6 months and continues to be breastfed up to present; baby has not been hospitalized for any sickness, and has normal weight from birth to present; mother not hypertensive during and after pregnancy and has updated mother and child book.
Rhesa Galingan and her child Luke Rhaizen G. Carino of Poblacion, Sadanga topped the search. Janet Mek-eng and child Bryce Reckter Mek-eng of Napua, Sabangan landed second while Joann Faowa and child Ezequiel Vance Faowa of Caluttit, Bontoc got third place.
Mother and child Rachel Herman and Wrhiane Lace Patyang of Pandayan, Tadian; Sila Sagayo and Reden Sagayo of Sadsadan, Bauko, Winnie Kinid and Zephyrene Sheaffer Kinid of Fiangtin, Barlig ranked fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
In the cooking contest participated in by health workers, the intum and sinigang na chalet (eel) with a twist of the municipality of Barlig was adjudged the winner.
“Binaklayang pising(gabi)” of the Sabangan health workers was second, Tadian’s “nasigtiman ay kumpiyas” (shellfish with aged rice wine) was third and fourth was the inabraw(vegetable medley) of Bontoc.
The dishes were judged based on criteria of 30% overall acceptability/palatability, 40% originality, 20% cost/economy and availability of ingredients, and 10% presentation.
The provincial government provided cash prizes and certificates of recognition to the top three winners, and consolation prizes and certificates of participation to the other entries in both contests. **JDP/JBS-PIA CAR, Mtn. Province
