CITY OF TABUK, Kalinga (PIA) – – Kalinga province is seen to become an agricultural growth corridor in North Luzon given its potential in rice and corn production.
Kalinga at present is the rice granary of the Cordillera region with Tabuk City contributing the largest production volume of the staple food.
DA-CAR Regional Executive Director Cameron Odsey, in his message during the recently concluded Matagoan festival, said that the region is considered to be self-sufficient when it comes to rice due to the high production of rice in Tabuk and some parts of Kalinga aside from being the prime agricultural province in the Cordillera.
DA-CAR has ever since fully supported the city of Tabuk especially under the rice and corn program including livestock.
“One advantage that I am looking at is that with President-elect Ferdinand “Bong-Bong” Marcos acting as DA Secretary, the approval of the budget of the department just like in any other departments of the government would be instant,” Odsey said.
He also believes that support from other agencies of government related to programs in agriculture that are considered in a critical situation will highly be possible, reducing the need for lobbying on the part of the executive department.
The Philippines at present has yet to achieve a 100 percent rice sufficiency level which is currently at 90 percent while the remaining 10 percent is dependent on import trade, Odsey said. **PAB-PIA CAR, Kalinga
