BAGUIO CITY– Councilor Michael Lawana has proposed a market day for organically-grown produce at the Igorot Park from 6 to 10 AM, during Saturday and Sundays.
According to the councilor, it was observed that organic products have limited market outlets, even as there are abundant and readily available organic products within the city and outskirts.
As to Republic Act 10068 known as the Organic Agricultural Act of 2010, which provides for the development and promotion of organic agriculture in the Philippines, there should be a designated separate area to display and avoid mixing products with non-organics. A trading post for organic outputs should be provided by every local government unit, RA 10068 states.
The products should be chemical and pesticide-free, promote biotechnology in agriculture and have organic integrity. According to Councilor Lawana, organically-grown food is essential to good physical, mental and emotional health thus the boost for an organics market.
A business permit should be procured by the seller, and the products registered; with the label, name, logo and seal of certifying body and accreditation number by the Department of Agriculture (DA-CAR), the proposal of councilor Lawana said further.
Mislabeling, or non-organic products claimed as being organically grown would have the seller barred and prohibited from participating in the market, penalized and his business permit revoked.
The sellers are also responsible for the provision of individual stalls, dismantling and cleanliness of the area after selling hours.
The proposal is slated for first reading during the council session this Monday. **juliegfianza
