Mayor Benjamin Magalong is looking to train athletes on disaster response saying their physical fitness and positive mental attitude are potential assets during emergencies.
“This initiative is a way to harness our athletes’ physical capabilities and discipline while strengthening the city’s pool of trained individuals who can assist in times of emergencies,” the mayor said.
The mayor directed City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Charles Bryan Carame to facilitate the conduct of the training as part of the office’s capacity building program.
He said he had also conferred with Baguio City Fire Marshal F Supt Mark Anthony Dangatan for the crafting of a training module tailored for athletes.
“Let us endeavor to schedule disaster response training for our athletes. Let us equip them with basic knowledge and skills in disaster response, including emergency assistance and other appropriate interventions during disasters and other emergencies,” the mayor said.
Carame said his office and the Baguio City Fire Station will collaborate to undertake the initiative as soon as possible.
The City Sports Division of the City Administrator’s Office said that at present, there are more than 1,000 athletes aged 12 years old and above in the city. ** Aileen P. Refuerzo
