BAGUIO CITY– The works of more than forty contemporary artists will be featured in an exhibition titled “new.s.feed” which will open on Oct. 13, 2018 at 4PM and will run until Nov. 2, 2018 at the Tam-Awan Village Gallery.
Responding to current socio-political issues using a format resembling social media posts, “new.s.feed” features works on paper and other media, with each piece occupying the space of a square (24 x 24 inches). Limiting the size and shape of each work, the artists in this show present a physical manifestation of how we voice out our concerns in the digital realm (such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). The show examines the ability of a restricted platform in engaging the public to navigate through important and pressing socio-political issues that affect the people and the environment.
“New.s.feed” brings forth the opinion and thoughts of each participating artist, thus, forming a collective examination of issues such as: The “Build, Build, Build” projects; Duterte’s economic deals with China; energy projects in the Cordilleras; soft imperialism in education and culture; indigenous resistance and mass movements; human rights violations; and effects of exploitative mining (whether small or large scale). The show asks an often ignored yet vital question, “Can the space of a limited square empower the people?”.
The exhibit also intends to create a dialogue between the works of artists whose practices are based in various places in Manila, the Cordilleras, and even as far as Bacolod. The “new.s.feed” is organized by artists Cian Dayrit (CCP Thirteen Artists Awardee 2018), Renz Baluyot (Fellow, Vermont Studio Center 2018), and Gwen Bautista (Independent curator and writer).
