LA TRINIDAD, Benguet–Achieve healthy weight for a healthy body and healthy mind thru healthy eating using the Pinggang Pinoy.
Thus advised Bella Basalong of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Cordillera to students of the Benguet National High School here during the Nutri Pasada program conducted by the Cordillera Administrative Region Media Educators in Nutrition (CARMENu) in partnership with NNC.
In her lecture entitled “Good Nutrition for Brighter Future,” Basalong stressed that ‘what you eat makes a difference in your health and your future accomplishments.’
She explained that the Pinggang Pinoy is a food guide which shows the right proportions and amounts of food groups to be consumed in a per-meal basis. It is composed of 17 percent fruits, 33% vegetables, 33% carbohydrate-rich foods, and 17% protein rich foods. Sufficient intake of water and regular physical activity are also included in the guide.
During adolescence, there is rapid growth in height and weight due to the simultaneous release of hormones needed to transition into adulthood.
With its simple and understandable design, the Pinggang Pinoy for teens features the GO, GROW, and GLOW food groups that are much needed by the teen body for energy, growth, and bodily processes. Sufficient intake of water and regular physical activity are also included in the guide.
The Pinggang Pinoy will help teenagers and parents in choosing healthy and nutritious foods.
Other topics discussed during the Nutri Pasada include “Sound Exercise for a Sound Mind” by Bernadeth C. Alalag, Wellness Coach/Yoga Instructor, Flycathers Yoga Studio; and Cristina M. Tolero, Agri-preneur/Admin Manager, La-Diyang Haven, who talked about “the Hows of Urban Gardening.”
The Nutri Pasada is an activity conceptualized by the CARMENu purposely to reach the people in the community and provide basic nutrition information and other services.
For this year, the Nutri-Pasada is anchored on the 2019 Nutrition Month theme which focuses on the promotion of healthy diet and physical activity to everyone, and to encourage overweight/obese participants to achieve their normal nutritional status through a biggest loser contest.
Aside from lectures on nutrition and urban gardening was the launching of the “Hataw” fitness competition, biggest loser challenge, Nutri – Garden contest and Nutri-Quiz Bee whose final judging will be conducted in October for the 2nd Nutri-Pasada. **JDP/MAWC – PIA CAR
