and 17 others fall
After more than three years of evading the long hand of the law, the region’s No. 5 Top Most Wanted Person (TMWP) for 2017 and for the 1st and 2nd Quarter of this year who is charged for the crime of murder finally landed in jail after he was nabbed in the morning of April 2, 2018 in front of the PRBS office at Camp Crame, Quezon City.
Police Chief Superintendent Edward E Carranza, regional director of PROCOR, identified the arrested suspect as Diosdado Mirador Mejala, former Chief of Police of Tubao, La Union with a rank of Police Chief Inspector.
Mejala is one of the suspects in the murder of Frank Joselito Dacanay Lopez on June 17, 2014 whose cadaver was dumped at Suello Village, Baguio City. The killing took place after the victim openly criticized the proliferation of flies in Tubao allegedly caused by poultry farms.
Before he went into hiding, Mejala was reassigned to MIMAROPA in 2008 after he was charged for the crime of murder. The case against him was later dismissed due to lack of probable cause, however, it was refiled after a reinvestigation thus the issuance of a warrant for his arrest on July 23, 2015 but he remained at large as he was reportedly hiding in Tubao, La Union.
The arrest of Mejala is a result of the intensified intelligence networking of the combined detectives of CIDG DSOU, CIDG RFU Cordillera and Regional Intelligence Division of PRO-Cordillera which eventually paid off. Judge Maria Ligaya V Itliong-Rivera, Presiding Judge, RTC Br 5, Baguio City did not set a bail bond for his temporary liberty.
Moreover, one more TMWP and 16 other wanted persons were nabbed on March 29, 2018 to April 2, 2018.
Carranza lauded the members of the operating units for the arrest of the wanted persons and encouraged all units in the region to sustain the operation against wanted persons.
“Putting all wanted persons behind bars will greatly help in achieving lasting peace in our community, thus, the cooperation of the public is being solicited to help our law enforcers arrest criminal suspects in our region the soonest,” Carranza stressed.
