Aiming to enhance Bauko constituents’ knowhow on milk handling and processing, the Local Government Unit of Bauko requested a training-workshop from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) led by the Provincial Science and Technology Center-Mountain Province (PSTC-MP). This was implemented at the Guinzadan National High School in Bauko on July 5-6, 2019 focused on dairy milk handling and processing.
Accordingly, the Bauko Dairy Farm in Barangay Tapapan currently produces an average of 52 liters of unpasteurized milk per day and with a projected increase of 12 liters per day for every succeeding year. This shows the potentiality of Bauko as a dairy milk supplier to the different enterprises and other individual consumers.
In line with this, the said training-workshop will thrust the constituents to avail of unpasteurized milk to process into milk by-products like cheese, yogurt, ice cream, pastillas and other possible products. This should serve as an alternative means of having an income.
According to Sharie Ann Songaben, participant from Lagawa, this training is very helpful especially for the jobless.
Meanwhile, the two-day activity was addressed to thirty-five (35) participants coming from eight barangays including Abatan, Bagnen Oriente, Guinzadan Sur, Guinzadan Norte, Mabaay, Lagawa, Tapapan, and Sinto. The partcipants were composed of high school students, livelihood organizations and others who are interested in processing milk..
Lectures on the procedures, appropriate measurements, ingredients to be used, food safety and other important reminders were the topics discussed. Pasteurized milk, mother seed of yogurt, yogurt drink, kesong puti, mozzarella cheese, choco-milk drink, sweetened pro-biotic drink, pastillas de leche, lasagna, pineapple pie, and cheese pie were the output of the participants.
“We can use this activity on our performance where our teachers get our grades. We also have the desire to teach to the next generation the processes and all that we have learned,” May-ann Kili expressed.
In support, Flordeliza Abnasan, a TLE teacher, pointed out that she pushed the students to attend the training because it will make them competent in coming up with alrernative products that could be sold.
