Preventing animal diseases is vital to the economy and safety of the country’s food supply and security.
The Department of Agriculture-Cordillera Administrative Region (DA-CAR) through the Regulatory Division conducted the Animal Health Welfare Forum at Crown Legacy, Baguio City on July 09, 2019.
Ruben Dulagan, OIC Chief Regulatory Division/ Livestock Banner Coordinator stressed that everyone is interested in animal health since it’s very essential to the consumers.
Dulagan said that as part of the veterinary governance, the efficient preventions on animal control relies on appropriate legislation and coordination of everyone.
One of the highlights of the said activity was the presentation of African Swine Fever Updates and Contingency Plans.
African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly contagious hemorrhagic fever in pigs caused by a virus and can be spread via fomites and in uncooked pig products.
Dr. Karl Kigis , ASF Regional Focal Person urges the LGUs to intensify their campaign through instructional, educational and communication activities to the public.
He stressed that ASF is a serious disease challenge requiring multi-sectoral and multi-level cooperation.
Part of the activity was the presentation of the drafted national contingency plan that was crafted by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) for the enhancement of the participants.
The said activity was attended by the representatives from the different Local Government Units (LGUs) of Benguet, Apayao, Kalinga, Mt. Province, Ifugao, and Abra.
Meanwhile, the participants were also oriented on the creation of quick response team for disease events and emergencies from DA Special Order No. 353, series of 2016 dated March 15, 2016.
Included topics on the said forum were on the n Dairy Development Project, Dairy Herd Health, Dairy Forage Development, Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases in the Philippines, Transboundary Diseases and Zoonotic Diseases, Insect-Borne Diseases, Antimicrobial resistance, Animal Diseases Reporting and among others.** Alfredo C.
