BAGUIO CITY (PIA) — United States Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson highlighted the unbreakable bond and alliance of the Philippines and the United States of America.
During the 80th Anniversary of Victory at Camp John Hay, Baguio City on September 3, 2025, Carlson said the alliance forged remains the bedrock of the enduring partnership of the two countries.
It was on Sept. 3, 1945 when Japanese Imperial Army General Tomoyuki Yamashita, the “Tiger of Malaya” was brought to Baguio to formally surrender following his capture by Filipino guerillas and American Forces in Kiangan, Ifugao a day earlier. He signed the surrender paper at Camp John Hay.
Yamashita, together with Admiral Denshichi Okochi, formally surrendered their forces at Camp John Hay, ending World War II in the Philippines.
“And today, the friendship between the United States and the Philippines is stronger than ever. It is a remarkable testament to a shared journey that we now stand alongside Japan united by our common values of democracy, freedom, and peace in the Indo-Pacific,” Carlson stated.
She said that the two nations have entered various partnerships, from security and economic prosperity to cultural exchange and humanitarian efforts ensuring a future of stability and opportunity.
The Ambassador said the City of Pines endured so much during World War II but the city rose from the ashes, demonstrating the resilience and strength of its people.
To honor this legacy, Carlson announced the launching of a virtual tour of the historic US Ambassador’s Residence now accessible online to everyone around the world. She said that this serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that shaped the present and a symbol of the partnership that continues to flourish.
“This initiative ensures the proud heritage we share is preserved for the future generations, inviting all to reflect on our past as we build a hopeful tomorrow,” Carlson said.
She also moved to further strengthen the alliance of the two countries, addressing the challenges and ensuring that the lessons of history guide them toward a more peaceful and prosperous world.
During the ceremony, four living veterans were recognized, namely; Sixta Fabula, Angelo Andrada, Florence Marasigan, and Ernesto Luis. **DEG-PIA CAR
