The youth has a vital role in environmental preservation and protection.
In recognition of the role the youth play in promoting environmental consciousness and values, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-CAR recognized and awarded the winners of a recently concluded poster-slogan making contest of the Department on May 22.
The poster-making slogan contest’s theme focuses on the Department’s advocacy on protection of rivers in the Cordillera Administrative Region.
Luke Isaac Labre, a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Architecture student from Baguio City won first place with his slogan “Young and old should know, what we reap is what we sow. Letting the rivers flow ensures our bright tomorrow”.
Acheon Reden, also a BS in Architecture student from Bontoc, Mountain Province bagged second place with his slogan which says, “Ignorance contaminates, it doesn’t cure, but awareness always keeps our rivers pure”.
The third place was bagged by Christian Osia, an incoming Grade 12 student from Rizal, Kalinga. His piece says, “Stop water pollution quickly. Let’s make our rivers healthy, to attain a clean community”.
The winners were awarded with Certificates of Recognition, tokens and cash prizes amounting to P6,000, P4,000 and P2,000, respectively.
Argil Jade Yangken, an incoming Grade 12 student from Kapangan, Benguet, one of the 38 participants to the contest, was present during the awarding ceremony and received his consolation prize.
During the awarding ceremony, Senior Ecosystems Management Specialist Linda Claire Pawid expressed gratitude to the 38 youth participants from all over the region. “The youth still cares for the environment. They have something to say about protecting our environment. Otherwise, we won’t have a successful contest”.
She also hopes more young people will participate in succeeding activities or contests of the Department which promote environmental awareness and leadership among the youth. Ms. Pawid also said that all the other participants to the contest shall be given their consolation prizes. They can claim these from the Office of the DENR–CAR, DENR Compound, Gibraltar, Baguio City.
The winning artworks are eyed to be converted into digital copies so they could be replicated and be made into signages to be posted in different areas near rivers in the region.**Giovani Joy N. Fontanilla
