BGUIO CITY March 21 – The local government is set to repair and establish some 14 satellite markets in strategic parts of the city to help in efforts to decongest the alleged overcrowding in the central business district and the public market.
Councilor Leandro B. Yangot Jr., chairman of the City Council Committee on Market, Trade, Commerce and Agriculture, said that the programmed repair and establishment of the satellite markets will be affected by the upcoming ban on the implementation of projects to pave the way for the conduct of the May 13, 2019 mid-term elections but the said projects will definitely be implemented right after the ban.
“We had been strongly pushing for the repair and puting up of satellite markets in strategic areas in the city to provide convenience to our constituents when purchasing their basic needs considering that the markets will be closer to their homes. We are glad that the concerned offices of the local government saw the need to repair and put up the satellite markets in various parts of the city and making the same one of the priority projects of the present administration,” Yangot stressed.
The alderman underscored that by operationalizing satellite markets in strategic parts of the city, economic activities and sources of livelihood of the people will surely be strengthened and distributed in the different potential growth areas instead of being concentrated in the central business district.
According to him, the presence of satellite markets in some of the city’s barangays over the past several years has contributed in convincing people living near the said public facilities to patronize the products sold there instead of going to the city’s public market and experience problems due to overcrowding among other related issues and concerns.
Yangot has been constantly advocating for the immediate repair and establishment of additional satellite markets in strategic areas in the city in the past to help in significantly improving he economic activities of people in the concerned barangays instead of allowing the concentration of business activities in the central business district.
Yangot claimed that funds for the repair and construction of satellite markets were already included in the approved 2019 annual budget of the local government which is now undergoing review by the budget and management department considering that all annual budgets of local governments are subject to review by the department prior to implementation.
Initially, the satellite markets will be located in barangays Gibraltar, Pacdal, Mines View, Engineer’s Hill, City Camp proper, Lower Rock Quarry, Bayan Park Village, Ambiong, Camp 7, Camp 8, San Vicente, Irisan-San Carlos area, Alfonso Tabora and New Lucban.
The other prospective sites for satellite markets are Hillside, Scout Barrio, Imelda Marcos, Fairview, Guisad Central, Camdas subdivision, Salud Mitra, Country Club, Loakan proper, Kias, Bakaeng Central, Bakakeng Norte/Sur, Dontogan, San Luis, Asin, Lourdes subdivision proper, Upper Quezon Hill, Pinsao Proper, Teodora Alonzo, West Modernsite, Imelda Village and Holyghost-Honeymoon.**By Dexter A. see
