BAGUIO CITY(PIA) — The Department of Trade and Industry in Apayao conducted trainings on Coffee Green Grading for farmers in the municipalities of Pudtol and Calanasan.
The training was aimed at capacitating the coffee farmers and processors of the two towns on coffee green grading to upscale the quality of coffee beans and be able to expand their markets outside the locality.
The training would also help prepare the coffee farmers in their participation in the 2023 Cordillera Coffee Quality Competition and eventually to the Philippine Coffee Quality Competition.
The Philippine Coffee Quality Competition serves as a marketing strategy where coffee products are introduced not only in the national market but also in the international market.
Mariel Kate Gannawa, the Provincial Coffee Industry Cluster point person of the DTI-Apayao, served as the resource speaker in the trainings.
Ganawwa presented the 2021-2025 Coffee Roadmap, Coffee Value Chain and the Philippine Coffee Quality Competition guidelines and gave emphasis on how the green beans are graded.
The farmers learned coffee grading criteria based on the fragrance/aroma, flavor, acidity, body and uniformity following the international standard. Likewise, on harvesting and sorting.
A workshop on coffee bean sorting and the identification of the defects as well as grading the green coffee beans was also done during the training.
The training was part of the continued support of the DTI-CAR to help Micro Small and Medium Enterprises in the region’s coffee industry. **JDP/RMC- PIA CAR
