BAGUIO CITY (PIA) – Remain unfazed by the challenges, persevere, be patient, work hard and have faith in God and be engaged in community activities.
Glomylica Mataag, Sangguniang Kabataan chair of Barangay Ucab in Itogon, Benguet urged her fellow youth during the Network Briefing News program of the Presidential Communications Operations Office in March 15.
“Ngayong pandemic alam natin mahirap mag aral at ang kabuhayan lalo na sa katulad naming nakaranas ng bagsik ng Bagyong Ompong at wala na ang primary source ng income. Sa kapwa ko youth, kailangan po natin ng perseverance, patience, hard work at pananalig sa Diyos at iyun ang gusto natin instill sa mga kabataan,” Mataag said.
She related that people of her barangay and municipality were still recovering from effects of the typhoon Ompong where massive landslides buried dozens of people and left many homeless, when the COVID 19 pandemic hit.
Despite all these challenges, she and the other SK in Ucab bonded to engage in activities that would help their fellow youth and their barangay during the pandemic. They organized youth groups to conduct volunteer work in their respective communities.
“During the pandemic, the SK encouraged the out of school youths (OSY) to create a group and be part of the volunteer activities being done in the municipality. Nagtawag po tayo ng youth na hindi enrolled nung time na yun, inorganisa natin sila at hinikayat na maging aktibo sa mga volunteerism activities ng pamahalaan, ng SK, ng munisipyo, kasama na ang Kabataan Kontra Droga at Terorismo,” she said.
The Ucab youth helped in the relief efforts and information campaign on the COVID-19. Bayanihan Competitions thru performing arts, literary arts, visual arts and short film making were also conducted to enhance and develop the skills of the youth.
Mataag said they conducted activities on environmental and beautification in the communities and schools. They led in the painting of murals on the waiting sheds and walls and fences in their barangays. Recently, the SK conducted vertical garden competition among the sitios of Ucab.
They also continued activities such as the Kabataan assemblies, Buwan ng Kabataan events and Mental Health Support and Training of SK Volunteers strictly following COVID-19 health and safety protocols.
Mataag added that engaging in community activities helps the youth with their mental health especially during the pandemic. At the same time, this would keep them from being involved with other groups that would lead to drugs or terrorism. (JDP/RMC- PIA CAR) (SK Ucab photos)
