In a strong display of patriotism and solidarity, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Cordillera Administrative Region (BFAR-CAR) joined the nation in commemorating the 9th anniversary of the landmark United Nations Arbitral Tribunal ruling that upheld the Philippines’ sovereign rights over the West Philippine Sea and invalidated China’s sweeping nine-dash line claim.
Under the theme “SEAries of Waves: WPS Victory Day, Our Seas, Our Rights, Our Future,” the Northern Luzon Command coordinated the event in partnership with other stakeholders. The purpose of the event was to celebrate the nation’s victory and strengthen popular support for the ongoing defense of Philippine territory.
Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong emphasized the importance of the occasion in asserting the nation’s sovereignty. Mayor Magalong noted that this is not only about protecting our territories but also noting its effect on the fisheries sector, primarily on food security.
LTC Benjamin P. Aguilan Jr., INF (GSC) PA added that this celebration is also a campaign to gather national support for the country’s fisherfolk. With the threats within the Philippine waters, this activity aims to protect the livelihood of fisherfolk and the territory of the country.
With this, the BFAR-CAR facilitated the awarding of livelihood assistance to selected fisherfolk groups in the region. Led by Carmelita B. Bolla, Chief of Fisheries Management Regulatory Enforcement Division, and Lorence B. Ognasi, Provincial Fisheries Officer of Benguet, the assistance included 7,500 pieces of fingerlings and grower-to-finisher feeds. Beneficiaries also received hygiene kits and cash donations from partner agencies.
Ognasi emphasized that this is part of the bureau’s program and project to provide livelihood assistance to qualified fisherfolk to support increased fish production and strengthen the livelihoods of small-scale fisherfolk.
As part of the awareness campaign, various activities were held, such as the distribution of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, face painting, and a Donation Drive Box, encouraging citizens to participate in the broader cause of maritime rights protection.
The event served not only as a celebration but also as a reminder to safeguard the future of the fisheries sector, the livelihood of thousands of fisherfolk, and the mark of the Philippines as an island country.**
