BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio Domogan, Rep. Mark Go and Vice Mayor Edison Bilog led other officials in launching the city’s celebration of National Bible Month in Monday’s flag-raising rites at the City Hall grounds with the theme, “Ang Biblia ay Sandigan ng Matuwid na Pamumuno at Pamumuhay (The Bible is the Foundation of Righteous Leadership and Living).”
Councilor Lilia Farinas, chair of the august body’s committee on social services, women and urban poor, said that Presidential Proclamation No. 124, series of 2017, declares January of every year as National Bible Month and the last week of January as National Bible Week in recognition of the elevating influence of religion in human society and the religious nature of Filipinos.
She added that Department of Interior and Local Government memorandum circular no. 2017-111 dated August 25, 2017, enjoins all local government officials and DILG regional directors to support the advocacy for moral development among the Filipino people through the transforming power of the Word of God.
The city council has also passed resolution no. 173, series of 2008, declaring the fourth week of January and every year thereafter as National Bible Week in the city of Baguio. It tasks the Baguio Character Council, in coordination with the faith community and Philippine Bible Society in leading and formulating the necessary activities for the celebration.
“Thus, every year, the nation commemorates and celebrates the importance of the Bible in nation-building. Churches, government and non-government offices have come together through parades, motorcades and rallies proclaiming the yearly theme of the Bible celebration,” Farinas said.
To kick-off the city’s celebration of National Bible Month and Week, city officials, the Baguio Character Council chaired by the Mayor, members of the faith community and several barangay captains led in the unfurling of a tarpaulin at the City hall grounds and distributed bibles to those present during the flag-raising rites.** gaby keith
