Another issue stunting our progress as a country or our localities is gambling. It kills initiative to innovate and work hard. It also kills faith in slow but constant progress through honest labor.
Instead, we are enamored with the thought of sudden wealth through bets or by winning the lottery. Or by hitching our future with that of politicians, expecting windfalls from them even at the cost of subservience to them
Now you seldom hear of working on one’s dreams the honest way. Where taking care of the future means taking care of one’s career. Or of the farm, or cash crops or livestock. Sadly, it now means taking care of a combination of numbers that might hit the jackpot in the sweepstakes or in the neighborhood gambling joints or the sari-sari store lottery called jueteng. Seldom do you hear now of securing one’s future by the sweat falling from one’s brow.
Even worse is many educated people have fallen into such trap. Of believing the best way to go is wait for some pot of gold from somewhere. Forgotten is the reality the hard way is the enduring way. Not only does it hone one’s brain and creativity. It makes normal having to roll up one’s sleeves and work hard for whatever task at hand. Whether for the short term or as a way of life.
For emphasis, certainly that is the enduring way. It persists no matter what one’s lot in life is. No matter the tribulations and vicissitudes one has to go through.
That is the best assurance of a good future. It will ultimately result in contentment and a high sense of security whatever happens, come hell or high water.
Politicians may tell you a lot of other things about the problems of our country which might be true. But if they don’t denounce, and are instead secretely supporting, the vices which are slowly corrupting our moral core, leading us to perdition, take note, they are hiding something. They might just be as corrupted to the core as the others.
Where does change truly occur? It is in us individuals, as we demand the same thing from our co called leaders.**
