LAGAWE, Ifugao- – The consensus that Poblacion Hingyon Cultural Organization Ensemble is still one of the best exponents in the propagation of the Ifugao culture is hard to dispute.
The 18-member musical performing unit, backed up by promising talents of Hingyon Central School, is out to prove this point with a presentation at a major program of a cooperative at the capital town of Lagawe.
“It’s always a pleasure and honor to present the very best of a rich culture such as ours before a large gathering this month,” Mrs. Ana Tundaqui said.
Mrs. Tundaqui is the coach and president of the ensemble. A retired public school teacher, Mrs. Tundaqui has promised to entertain the audience with an unforgettable rendition of a Ballihung number.
Ballihung is a prestigious ritual for single men and women in the province.
The ensemble is composed of Bango Cuntig, Micah Cuntig, Pedro Binwag, Hiro Humiding, Justine Dulnuan, Victor Buyuccan, Peter Buyuccan Jr., Matet Pitan, Kay Ballanti, Bea Buyuccan, Tomasa Binwag, Cristina Kimmayong, Rosita Cuntig, Agnes Ballanti, Bugan Dinamling, Pacing Bangeng and Anita Badangan. Tomasa Binwang also serves as another coach.
The popular Poblacion Hingyon Cultural Organization Ensemble has been formed to promote the Ifugao culture and at the same time raise awareness and consciousness of the people, most especially the young, of the value of the music, dances, and literature of the indigenous people’s communities in this part of the region. It has performed in Baguio City, La Trinidad, Benguet and many other places in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). It was also adjudged as winner of a prestigious competition at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) a few years back.
Life is truly filled with many rewards- for those in Ifugao, one of them is to take part in a Ballihung number. Truth to tell, taking part is a fulfilling experience to many. Its essence has been passed from one generation to another. The ensemble itself is composed mostly of the young.
The group is also viewed as an integral component in promoting community-based tourism in this upland province. Ensemble officers are banking on the support and assistance of Governor Pedro Mayam-o to further advance its noteworthy goals.** By Anthony A. Araos
