The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading HB 6152 (substitute bill) institutionalizing the compressed work week by increasing the normal work hours per day while reducing the number of work days per week.
The original measure (HB 5068) authored by Rep. Mark Go of the Lone District of Baguio City amends Articles 83, 87 and 91 of the Labor Code particularly on the provisions of normal hours of work, overtime work and rest day. The compressed work week allows employees to work more than 8 hours a day but only four days or five days a week. Work done beyond 48 hours a week shall be paid overtime in accordance with existing laws.
Among others, the approved bill also provides that in cases of compressed workweek scheme, rest days of a period of not less than forty-eight (48) hours or seventy-two (72) hours, depending on the compressed work week schedule, shall be provided to the employees.
The rationale and objective of a compressed workweek scheme is to promote business competitiveness, work efficiency and labor productivity. “This bill aims at improving employers and employees’ flexibility in fixing hours of work compatible with business requirements and the employees’ need for a balanced work-life,” Go stressed. Furthermore, this will help in improving the traffic condition in various urban centers as less people will be travelling to and from work.
Said approved measure shall be immediately transmitted to the Senate for consideration and approval.**
